An aging Gen X icon who couldn’t resist the lure of controlling a new and very lucrative franchise. A studio who was looking to the past to reinvent classic characters. Budgets grew and so did egos. The production itself was an absolute disaster. At one point, the studio didn’t even think it would be releasable. Take a journey back with me to the time when everyone was trying to build their own universe like the MCU. Except this time, it didn’t work out. This is the story of the birth and the death of The Dark Universe.

Let me take you back to a time before Disney owned Star Wars or Marvel. When they were trying to develop their own intellectual properties. With gargantuan hits like Pirates of the Caribean and Tron: Legacy, the studio felt like they couldn’t lose. A director who made some of the most important films of the early 2000s had now put his entire career on the line. They were ready to change the world, that was until Avatar beat them to the punch. This is the unfortunate story of a film that I truly believe is cursed.

He was a global mega star riding high off of the biggest movie of his career. From video games to toys, this mega-watt talent controlled every facet of this film’s production with an iron fist. Originally, this film was written as an R-rated blood bath, but for some reason the studio wanted a PG-13 family friendly summer blockbuster. This is the story of the movie that tried to slay the dinosaurs. And spoiler alert: the dinosaurs won.

This actor would garner a reputation of being “tough to work with” after dropping out of Beverly Hills Cop. This is a story about ego, hubris, and the movie that went head-to-head against Top Gun.
